In March, the wind is crisp over the broad sea in Boao, Hainan. As the tune from “The Clear Water of the Wanquanhe River” sounds out once again, the entire world’s attention is concentrated on this very spot.

The Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2019, as China’s first major diplomatic event of the year, took place from March 26th to 29th. The Conference brought together over 2,000 participants from 60 countries all over the world, including politicians, business leaders, and scholars from think tanks, to discuss strategies for win-win cooperation and seek solutions for boosting prosperity. The objective is to contribute “Boao’s wisdom and strength” to the development in Asia and the world at large.

Premier of the State Council Li Keqiang attended the Opening Ceremony of the Conference and delivered a keynote speech titled “Jointly Tackling Challenges for Common Development”. In his speech, he noted that, “The Forum, with its founding focus on Asia and a global perspective, has put forth many valuable suggestions and recommendations on major issues of public interest concerning economic and social development, evolving into an influential high-level dialogue platform for Asia and beyond.”

At the 2019 Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference, Li Baodong, secretary-general of the Boao Forum for Asia, noted that this year’s conference was being held during a period of downward pressure on the world economy, with the situation remaining uncertain both internationally and regionally. He said that the strong support for multilateralism and globalization is the most encouraging news and biggest achievement of this year’s Conference. Chairman of the Boao Forum for Asia, Ban Ki Moon also stated that the Forum’s influence is already spreading beyond Asia, and is turning its transformative voice towards the wider world.

Representatives of the Conference generally believe that all parties should come together to promote development by upholding the United Nations at the core of the international system and maintaining a regulated multilateral trading system, whilst actively promoting global governmental reforms to create a fully open world economy. This is a proposition of Asia, as well as an inevitable choice to build the community of shared future for mankind.

One year ago, China announced a series of major opening-up measures, fulfilling the promise that “China’s great open door will never close; it will only open up further and further”. This powerful promise was echoed once again at the opening ceremony of the very first China International Import Expo, held at the end of 2018 (where, likewise, Grouphorse was the official translation services provider).

A year later, all due to the accurate conveying of information by the live simultaneous interpreters, the world quickly learned a series of new pledges from China to open up – “By the end of this year, we will complete formulating a complete set of legislation relating to foreign investment laws, to be rolled out on the first of January next year”; “We will further relax the restrictions on foreign investors when accessing the Chinese market”; “We will continue to expand foreign access to such fields as the financial industry and modern service industries”; “We will practice equal treatment of Chinese and foreign enterprises, and earnestly defend the legitimate rights and interests of foreign businesspeople”…

Looking back on the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2019, many government and business leaders gathered in sub-forums focusing on subjects such as the “Belt and Road” Initiative, free trade zones, and reform of World Trade Organization. In the simultaneous interpretation rooms, the Grouphorse interpreters translated across multiple languages the key words including “openness,” “reform,” and “cooperation”. Undoubtedly, this proves that countries around the world have a heartfelt desire to safeguard multilateralism, follow a common path towards development, and push for win-win cooperation.
