Grouphorse launches interpreting camp in London

Updated:October 11, 2016

Grouphorse unveiled its interpreting camp in London on October 3.

During the eight days, the camp members were coached by Mr. Zhang Guangbo, a seasoned simultaneous interpreter at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and an AIIC member, and got to practice interpreting at the 66th session of the IMO Technical Cooperation Committee.

They took a multi-pronged training session where they learned about how to provide standing consecutive interpreting services, express the speaker’s tone, do whispering interpreting, deliver public speeches, and prepare thoroughly for conference interpreting tasks and the interpreting market in the UK.

In addition, they were invited to the China-British Business Council (CBBC), Grouphorse’s long-time client, where they had a roundtable meeting with CBBC staff, and went to the Houses of Parliament, the Westminster Abbey, the Buckingham Palace, the St James’s Park, the Elizabeth Tower (formerly known as Big Ben), the 10 Downing Street, Chinatown, the Hyde Park, the Trafalgar Square, and the British Museum.

The camp members also had a good time in the Bodleian Library, one of the oldest libraries in Europe, the Christ Church where Harry Potter series were shot, the Turf Tavern, a malt house and drinking tavern opened in 1381, which was frequented by former U.S. President Bill Clinton.

The eight-day journey greatly improved interpreting learners’ interpreting skills, understanding of a different culture and foreign affairs, which also echoed the national drive to promote people-to-people and cultural exchanges through international education, as well as the Belt and Road Initiative.
